Maintaining a sense of calm and managing your stress levels as best you can is ideal for effective studying and passing the test. To that end, here are some strategies to help you stay calm during your ASWB exam preparation:

Establish a Study Routine: Create a study schedule that allows for regular breaks and balances your study time with other activities. Having a structured routine will help you feel more in control and reduce the feeling of overwhelm.

Practice Self-Care: Prioritize self-care activities such as exercise, adequate sleep, and healthy eating. Engaging in activities that promote relaxation, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, can also help manage stress and keep you calm.

Break It Down: Break your study material into manageable chunks. Trying to tackle everything at once can be overwhelming. Focus on one topic or section at a time, and celebrate small victories along the way. This approach will help you maintain a sense of progress and reduce anxiety.

Utilize Effective Study Strategies: Find study techniques that work best for you. This could include creating flashcards, summarizing key concepts in your own words, or teaching the material to someone else. Engaging with the content actively can enhance understanding and retention, leading to increased confidence.

Seek Support: Connect with peers or join study groups to share experiences, exchange study materials, and provide mutual support. Talking about your concerns and sharing strategies can alleviate stress and provide helpful insights.

Take Breaks and Rest: Give yourself regular breaks during study sessions to rest and recharge. Overworking can lead to burnout and decreased productivity. Taking short breaks to engage in enjoyable activities will help you relax and maintain a clear mind.

Remember, everyone prepares differently, so find what works best for you. Some exam features (eg strikethrough and highlighting) have been added. But there hasn't been a change to how questions on social work licensing exam look for a long, long while. Until now.

The change is small, but could have meaningful impact on your exam experience and your exam result. The ASWB is introducing questions with three possible answers instead of four. That means less time to read through everything. And that means a greater chance of getting the answer right. It's as if test writers have come into the testing room at scratched one of the offered answers out for you. Where once you had ABCD to choose from, you'll now (sometimes, not usually, not always) have just ABC.

Which of the following medications is used as an antipsychotic mood stabilizer?

A. Gabapentin (Neurontin)

B. Quetiapine (Seroquel)

C. Lamotrigine (Lamictal)

This is one of those you know it if you know it questions. But now, if you don't know it, your chances are boosted that you'll get the answer right (33% chance!).

So...what's your answer? If you said seroquel, you're right (the other two are anti-convulsant mood stabilizers).

You didn't know that? Not a big deal. Medication questions--especially ones that require this type of specific knowledge--are increasingly rare on the ASWB exam, which is designed to test for beginning social work knowledge, skills, and abilities. (If you want to know more about these meds, here's a link.)

In any case, stay calm, carry on, get lots of practice questions under your belt, and go pass that exam!

Pass the ASWB Examhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04454748260886075082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5638406786237446480.post-19701795579571295992021-08-09T15:35:00.004-07:002021-08-09T15:37:42.331-07:00Still More Free Exam Practice Questions

From the SWTP blog, here's another set of free questions to help get your ready to pass the ASWB exam. Blog pal, exam tutor, Ray Batista published Five Tips for Getting Your Social Work License This Year at the beginning of the year. Now that the year's winding down, it's either time to turbo-charge your efforts on your January resolutions and get the exam passed, or time to strategize passing soon after the calendar changes over. Either way, it's time!

Summarizing the post:

Get started early. While some states require internship hours before sitting for any ASWB exam, others allow you to take them much earlier. Find out how things work in your state and, if you can, get ready to pass the exam while your textbook learning is fresh.

Partialize. Partializing isn't just something you can tell clients to help them achieve their goals. It's also a way to achieve yours. Take small bites. They're easier to digest. Study what you can, when you can, pacing yourself. Study smarter, not harder.

Practice. How else do you know what it'll feel like to sit down for the long, long test? How else do you know what you need to spend extra time learning? Practice tests are your friend.

Pass with others. Find study partners IRL or online. Coach and support each other. Sometimes having to help someone learn a difficult topic is the best way to get it fully understood.

Focus on the "why." It's easy to get frustrated with all the hoops you have to jump through to get licensed. Remember why you're getting licensed. Remember why you got into social work in the first place.

First, to get started, a definition (from the Merck Manual)

Somatization is the expression of mental phenomena as physical (somatic) symptoms. Disorders characterized by somatization extend in a continuum from those in which symptoms develop unconsciously and nonvolitionally to those in which symptoms develop consciously and volitionally.

Can you name define each of these?

Somatic symptom disorder
Illness anxiety disorder
Conversion disorder
Factitious disorder

Let's turn to the DSM Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders chapter for answers.

Somatic symptom disorder has the following criteria:

A. Distressing somatic symptoms
B. Excessive thoughts, feelings, or behaviors related to those symptoms.
C. Symptoms appear for more than 6 months.

Illness anxiety disorder involves preoccupation with acquiring a serious illness without the presence of somatic symptoms. You may know this by the retired term hypochondriasis.

Conversion disorder requires symptoms of altered voluntary motor or sensory function that are incompatible with recognized neurological or medical conditions. That is, the symptoms don't match a known diagnosis.

Factitious disorder can be Imposed on Self or Imposed on Another. Both types involve the falsification of physical or psychological signs or symptoms associated with identified deception. The behavior is evident even in the absence of external rewards.

You can easily imagine ASWB exam questions that might test for your knowledge of these disorders. Something like...

A client worries constantly about getting cancer. He frequently visits doctors and requests the latest scan to be reassured that there is nothing wrong with him. What is the BEST diagnosis for this client?

Or...

A client reports agonizing knee pain that keeps her from being able to enjoy her life. She has received a clean bill of health from multiple doctors. What is the MOST likely diagnosis for this client?

And now that you've read this post, you'll be ready for them! (Answers: Illness anxiety disorder and Somatic disorder.)

You're that much more ready for the exam. Though this is no substitute for full-length practice tests, of course. But closer is closer.
What's goes into a biopsychosocial assessment? Simple: biology, psychology, social/cultural, um, -ology. Here's a page from Palomar College social work-slash-psych class that lays it all out.

From the page:

<span style="background-color: white; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "latoweb" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;"> The biopsychosocial (BPS) framework is an approach that emphasizes the importance of a systemic view of the individual and an integration of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors on human development and functioning. The biopsychosocial interview, an assessment typically conducted by therapists and counselors at the beginning of therapy, assesses for biological, psychological and social factors that can be contributing to a problem or problems with a client. It's considered a holistic assessment, looking at a client on all different levels. The biopsychosocial interview is utilized because problems usually don't exist in a vacuum--they all influence each other in different ways. It's not enough just to look at a person; you have to look at his or her environment as well.
<strike></strike>
Also on the page is a link to this biopsychosocial assessment form which, if you haven't encountered them in the field or classroom, will give you a better sense of a thorough BPS exam than all the descriptions you can find.

How might this appear on the ASWB exam? It might not. Nor may the mental status exam, which is detailed further down the linked page.

If you were an exam writer, how would you include either BPS or MSE into a question?
When you're getting licensed, you're not just taking the ASWB exam. You're taking one of several levels of ASWB exam: Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical.

Not all states ask social workers to work their way through all levels. And different states give different designations for passing different exam levels. The most common for the Masters exam is LMSW; for the Clinical exam, it's LCSW.

Regardless of which exam you're preparing for, it's worth asking, how is this exam different from the others. Since there are more people taking the Masters and Clinical exams, for this post, let's answer this question: What's the difference between the LMSW and LCSW exam?

Short answer: really not that much.

Both have 170 questions (with 20 uncounted--they're tester questions which will be used in future editions of the exam, if they pass muster). Both take four hours. Both are comprised primarily of vignette questions including close-call situations that everyday social workers face. Though the Clinical exam comes after the Masters exam in some states, they're both designed to assess for knowledge, skills, and abilities that might be expected in a beginning social worker.

Digging deeper, let's look at the exam outlines for each and compare.

The Masters exam is broken down this way:

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, DIVERSITY, AND BEHAVIOR IN THE ENVIRONMENT (27%)

ASSESSMENT AND INTERVENTION PLANNING (24%)

INTERVENTIONS WITH CLIENTS/CLIENT SYSTEMS (24%)

PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS, VALUES, AND ETHICS (25%)

The Clinical exam breakdown is this:

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, DIVERSITY, AND BEHAVIOR IN THE ENVIRONMENT (24%)

ASSESSMENT, DIAGNOSIS, AND TREATMENT PLANNING (30%)

PSYCHOTHERAPY, CLINICAL INTERVENTIONS, AND CASE MANAGEMENT (27%)

PROFESSIONAL VALUES AND ETHICS (19%)

What do you notice? The Masters exam has 3% more items from the first category. That's about five questions. The Clinical exam adds "Diagnosis" to the second grouping and adds 6% (ten questions). The third group gets a name tweak and a 3% difference. The last category--the one based primarily on the NASW Code of Ethics--is weighted more heavily on the Masters than on the Clinical.

So, out of 170 questions, the biggest swing you'll see one way or another is 10 questions in any given category. Over the course of four hours, that's a difference that will be pretty hard to detect. The Clinical exam will have more questions about diagnosis, but don't count on being spared diagnostic questions on the Masters exam. One of the areas in the Masters content outline is "the use of the DSM."

So, as you're preparing for the Masters, don't shy away from LCSW materials, and vice versa. The vast majority of content is similar or the same. And the test-taking process is exactly the same--narrowing down from four choices to the three best, the two best, the one best answer.

Once you've done that 170 times and gotten around 70-75% of them right, you've passed. You're licensed. And you don't have to worry about this distinction any more (or at least for a while). Congratulations in advance!
Here's another set of quick quiz questions to help you prep for the ASWB exam. This isn't the format of ASWB exam questions, but all the content comes from the ASWB exam outline. Seek out full-length practice tests to get a sense of both exam content and format. That's really the best way to prepare, but for now... See how you do.
Let's see how well you know your way around the Mental Status Examination (MSE). First, here's what an MSE is:

The Mental Status Exam is analogous to the physical exam: it is a series of observations and examinations at one point in time. Focused questions and observations can reveal "normal" or pathological findings. Although our observations occur in the context of an interview and may therefore be ordered differently for each patient, the report of our findings is ordered and "paints a picture" of a patient's appearance, thinking, emotion and cognition.

Simple enough. There are some tricky details and vocabulary within the MSE that may show up on the ASWB exam. Taking this quiz should get you all-the-more ready for MSE questions on the social work licensing exam.

1. What characteristic might be described by one of these: Hesitant, expansive, rambling, halting, stuttering, lilting, jerky, forgetful.

2. What are auditory, visual, and olfactory hallucinations?

3. What is an overvalued idea.

4. Define flight of ideas.

Remember, the real ASWB exam doesn't quiz like this. Questions tend to be longer form vignettes. Try practice tests like those from SWTP to prepare for the full-length, 170-question ASWB exam. Generally, the more practice, the readier you'll be.
Want to pass the ASWB exam? Here's a little workout to get you a little bit more ready. These come from all around the exam outline, just like the real thing. (Though unlike the real thing, they're not vignettes, not multiple choice questions. Good practice tests will have those.)

Quick quiz starts...now!

1. In the DSM, a pervasive pattern of disregard for the rights of other people that often manifests as hostility and/or aggression.

2. True or false: Biological sex, gender identity, and gender expression are all different.

3.True of false: A crisis may be different from a problem or an emergency.

4. Unpredicted or markedly successful adaptations to negative life events, trauma, stress, and other forms of risk (Greene, 2002).

5. In the DSM, clinical distress due to a perceived physical anomaly, such as a scar, the shape or size of a body part, or some other personal feature.

What do you say?

How'd you do?

If you had no idea about these...great, you have some idea about what to study (and have the answers!). If you zipped through these without a problem...great, you're getting closer and closer to being licensed. Remember, the real ASWB exam doesn't include true/false questions or direct definition questions like these. It's 170 multiple choice questions, usually vignettes that put you in real-world social work situations with less-than-obvious correct answers. To be sure you're ready, practice a bunch--full-time practice tests are ideal.
Past quizzes have kept you anchored by being about one topic or another. Today, we'll zip around in the ASWB exam outline to find various unrelated topics to draw questions from. Are you ready to pass the social work licensing exam? This is one way to find out. (Practice tests are another, better way, but...you know that already.) Ready...set...go:

1. What is PIE theory?

2. DSM disorder characterized by abnormal thought processes and an unstable mood. The diagnosis is made when the person has features of both schizophrenia (usually psychosis) and a mood disorder—either bipolar disorder or depression—but doesn't meet the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia or a mood disorder separately.

3. Directive, client-centered counseling style for eliciting behavior change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence. Compared with non-directive counseling, it is more focused and goal-directed, and departs from traditional Rogerian client-centered therapy through this use of direction, in which therapists attempt to influence clients to consider making changes, rather than engaging in non-directive therapeutic exploration.

4. A social worker asks a client to count backwards from 100. What assessment tool is the social worker most likely utilizing?

5. Name three phases in the family life cycle.
1. The person-in-environment (PIE) perspective in social work is a practice-guiding principle that highlights the importance of understanding an individual and individual behavior in light of the environmental contexts in which that person lives and acts. The perspective has historical roots in the profession, starting with early debates over the proper attention to be given to individual or environmental change. Tis the season to shower gifts on your loved ones and co-workers (and your favorite helpful bloggers?). That all costs money. Maybe you don't have lots left over to spend on exam prep. Well, happily, a certain amount of your studying can be done free of charge. Googling around will take you to free flash cards and free exam questions. SWTP has a free study guide (sign-up required). Price? Zero.

And, if you haven't seen it, here's a set of 27 free practice questions from simmons.edu. They're good questions. But you'll have to figure out why the correct answers (included at the bottom of the doc) are the correct answers. Rationales were probably reserved for whatever class these were created for. Good study group fodder, if you've got a study group.

Also check out the Eye on Ethics column in Social Work Today magazine. Each column contains a vignette which poses just the kind of ethical and procedural quandaries that make up the exam. Only, they're not laid out in ASWB question form. You'll have to imagine what those might look like yourself. Same goes for the information-rich episodes of the Social Work Podcast, mentioned in the previous post.

You can also piece together a half-exam's worth of free questions by trying out the free samples from various companies. Links to several of them are here.

That should keep you busy for a while. Of course--this kind of goes without saying--there's nothing like a full-length practice test to get you ready for the real thing. Include those in your study plan as well, if and when you can.

If you have additional resources to suggest, please don't hesitate to post them in comments. Social workers are helpers, but also need help sometimes.
Need a break from reading and practice tests? Have a long commute? There's a huge amount of test prepping that can be done via speakers and earbuds. And most of it is free. You really don't need more than the Social Work Podcast to get everything you might need to pass the ASWB exam.

Check out this categorized list of everything the SWP has covered over the years. Addictive disorders, behaviorism, case management, child protection... They're all there. And they're all covered by more than one podcast.

If you give a careful listen to all the SWP episodes that are more-or-less exam related, it's going to help you on question after question on the licensing exam.

Prefer to read? Read the transcripts instead. They're included on each episode's page. There are hours and hours of material here. Maybe start with the counseling, DSM, and ethics sections. Or just dip into whatever interests you most. Hearing how thoughtful social work pros approach difficult questions is a good use of your social working/test prepping time. You'll probably enjoy it too.
One more fill-in-the-blanks quiz from the NASW Code of Ethics. You don't have to have the Code memorized--not even close. But it's ideal to understand the gist of what each section of the Code is getting at. That's where these quizzes come in. How well do you understand social work ethics?

Give this a try. The Payment for Services section. Fill in the blanks.

(a) When setting fees, social workers should ensure that the fees are _________________ and commensurate with the services performed. Consideration should be given to clients' ability _________.

(b) Social workers should ____________ accepting goods or services from clients as payment for professional services. Bartering arrangements, particularly involving services, create the potential ______________________________________ in social workers' relationships with clients. Social workers should explore and may participate in bartering only in very limited circumstances when it can be demonstrated that such arrangements are _____________________________________________________________________________ [5 conditions for bartering] . Social workers who accept goods or services from clients as payment for professional services assume the full burden of demonstrating that this arrangement will not be _______________ to the client or the professional relationship.

(c) Social workers should not solicit a private fee or other remuneration for providing services to clients who are entitled to such available services through _______________________________.

How'd you do?

These aren't easy! How many of those conditions for bartering were you able to think up from memory and common sense? If you got three, that's amazing--hope you'll give yourself a pat on the back or some other show of "nice job" to yourself.

On the real ASWB exam, there are no fill-in-the-blanks questions. Most questions are fairly complicated vignettes. But remember that lots of them lean on the Code of Ethics. Knowing this section and other will help you speed through ethics questions on the exam. That leaves more time for other test questions. Or maybe you can just get out early and start celebrating your new license.
Good luck.
Next up, let's take on the Conflicts of Interest section of the NASW Code of Ethics. How well do you know it? Well, let's see. Fill in the blanks!

Remember, this isn't what the ASWB exam looks like. For those, check out practice tests (linked nearby). But this is ASWB exam content. It's material to review again and again. And though you shouldn't expect yourself to be able to answer verbatim what goes in the blanks below, challenge yourself to guess at the gist of what belongs in the emptied spaces.

Ready? Action!

(a) Social workers should be ______________________ conflicts of interest that interfere with the exercise of professional discretion and impartial judgment. Social workers should inform clients when a real or potential conflict of interest arises and __________________________ the issue in a manner that makes the clients' interests primary and protects clients' interests to the greatest extent possible. In some cases, protecting clients' interests may require ______________________________ with proper referral of the client.

(b) Social workers should not take unfair advantage of any professional relationship or exploit others to further their ____________________________ interests.

(c) Social workers should not engage in _____________________________ with clients or former clients in which there is a risk of exploitation or potential harm to the client. In instances when ____________________________ are unavoidable, social workers should take steps to protect clients and are responsible for setting clear, appropriate, and culturally sensitive boundaries.

(d) When social workers provide services to two or more people who have a relationship with each other (for example, couples, family members), social workers should ________________________________ and the nature of social workers' professional obligations to the various individuals who are receiving services.

(e) Social workers should ___________ communication with clients using technology (such as social networking sites, online chat, e-mail, text messages, telephone, and video) for personal or non-work-related purposes.

(f) Social workers should be aware that posting personal information on professional Web sites or other media might cause ___________________________________________ to clients.

(g) Social workers should be aware that personal affiliations may increase the likelihood that clients may discover the social worker’s presence on Web sites, social media, and other forms of technology. Social workers should be aware that involvement in electronic communication with groups based on race, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, mental or physical ability, religion, immigration status, and other personal affiliations may affect their ability to work effectively with particular clients.

(h) Social workers should ________ accepting requests from or engaging in personal relationships with clients on social networking sites or other electronic media to prevent boundary confusion, inappropriate dual relationships, or harm to clients.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Next up in our tour through quizzified sections of the NASW Code of Ethics, 1.03, Informed Consent. Your task: summon, through memory and common sense deduction, the missing phrases from each paragraph. Aka, fill in the blank!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">(a) Social workers should provide services to clients only in the context of a professional relationship based, when appropriate, on valid informed consent. Social workers should use clear and understandable language to inform clients of the___________ of the services, ___________related to the services, limits to services because of the requirements of a third-party payer, relevant costs, reasonable alternatives, clients' right to refuse or withdraw consent, and the time frame covered by the consent. Social workers should provide clients with an opportunity to ask questions.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
(b) In instances when clients are not literate or have difficulty understanding the primary language used in the practice setting, social workers should take steps to _____________________. This may include providing clients with a detailed verbal explanation or arranging for a qualified interpreter or translator whenever possible.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
(c) In instances when clients lack the capacity to provide informed consent, social workers should protect clients' interests by ________________________________________, informing clients consistent with the clients' level of understanding. In such instances social workers should seek to ensure that the third party acts in a manner consistent with clients' wishes and interests. Social workers should take reasonable steps to enhance such clients' ability to give informed consent.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
(d) In instances when clients are receiving services involuntarily, social workers should provide information about the nature and extent of services and about the extent of clients' right to _______________.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This is not easy. Don't beat yourself up for not getting these. Instead, give yourself a pat on the back for attempting them. You've just reviewed the first part of the Informed Consent section of the Code of Ethics, material that is very likely to show up somewhere in the 170 questions on your social work licensing exam. Nice work!
